Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
